CITY OF GOD ANALYSIS

In the beginning, extreme close up shots of the knives in very fast-paced is used to throw the audience's sense of surrounding creating a sense of thrill and urgency. The close-up shots of the knives make the audience feel as if they are thrown straight into the action and the knives could symbolise how the movie will most likely be about violence and action. Furthermore, all the shots last less than a second and have a shaky handheld effect to them creating a chaotic atmosphere which could be foreshadowing how the main character's life is unpredictable and had been since the beginning. Also, the diegetic music (which is fast tempo and Latin American) works perfectly with the editing, chaotic atmosphere and immerse the audience more into the scene. There are many close up shots of the chicken so as humans we can sympathise with the chicken with its subtle facial expressions and movements and we also almost relate with the chicken to its reaction to this energetic and chaotic scene. As the progress of the shot, the shots become more violent and gruesome which maybe be trying to show that the main character's life will be more brutal and vicious as his life continues and he may encounter many deaths and murders. The movie also took a different approach to an establishing shot rather than showing where the setting is in a long shot the movie did lots of different close-up shots to create what the surroundings could be like.

Then the chicken escapes and there is a shot of the blood on the plate. During this shot, the music stops and the fast pace editing is slowed down. This creates an awkward, tense and agitated atmosphere. Also, this prolonged shot of blood could be foretelling the main character's life will be revolved with murder, gang, violence and maybe his future isn't so optimistic and he may end up being killed or murdered. The ending of the movie could be vile and unsettling. Then the first dialogue comes causing the chase to begin. The pace of editing increases again to show how energetic and reckless this really is. Then we get extreme close ups of the characters face, who said the chicken had escaped, which causes discomfort because of how close the camera is to his face and the exaggerated facial expression he has. These close up shots can be showing that he may be quite important in the plot as the movie progress. Since he was the one who declared the chicken had escaped, maybe he the leader of the gang because he is the one who ordered everyone to go and chase the chicken. Then there is an establishing shot at a high angle to show how the location has changed. And then there are lots of tracking shots of the chicken so the speed can be emphasised with the editing pace. Also, it shows how desperate the chicken is to escape which also creates how bizarre the whole situation is. There is also non diegetic music in the background to quicken the pace of the chase and make the viewer feel as if they are a part of the chase. Then the music is stopped abruptly and the editing pace is slowed down as the main characters are introduced. Also the way the character are filmed is opposite to how the chase is being filmed which makes the audience know beforehand that they will meet. Then the scene continues again with the shots of the chicken chase where the scene does a shot of a character pushing the a civilian on the floor. The shot is edited to be shown twice which may further emphasise his character to be vile and evil. Then editing is slowed down extremely when the gang meets the main character and the light is reflected on the gun foreshadowing the cruel death of the main character, maybe he will get murdered. Then the camera does a 360 shot with the police behind him and the gang in front of him. This could show how is life is intertwined within criminals without him choosing it. Also displaces the fear and panic in the character because of the crowd surrounding him. The camera does a second 360 shot and transitions back into the sixties when he was a child and him in a similar position physically and emotionally. Also the 360 shot could show that beginning is suppose to be his future and how his life progress for him to reach to the same position he was when he was only child and show if anything different may change.
