Question 1
“Realism is a vital component of the television drama”. To what extent does an analysis of your television close-study products support this view? [25 marks]
Realism is how accurately something portrays real life. It is very important in television drama because a drama must reflect some ideas of real life. Realism can come into 4 categories surface realism, inner and emotional realism, the plausibility of the narrative or plot and social realism (according to https://www.slideshare.net/brownnuttlucy/realism-in-tv-dramas-and-british-film)
When relating this to Capital it is clear to see according to surface realism Capital is very accurate however this maybe because of how recent the events. Capital confides to stereotypes by making the Kamal family own a corner shop, Roger working in a bank and Quentina's chaotic living arrangements. On a positive note, this would show how the lives of the character in Capital is quite realistic however on more negative note this could be seen as the exact opposite and lack of accuracy by making it seem people who come from certain ethnicity or class can only be categorised as the charters. Also Capital made sure that every character has an accurate accent, for example, the Kamal family have a British accent to show how they settled very well in the UK and submerging well into the British culture. Furthermore, the setting is very realistic for example the under the armpit show in the underground shows quite realistic how London life is and through the cinematograph represents the chaos and immersive life of London.
For the inner emotions of the characters, there is a balance between realistic and unrealistic responses from characters. For example when Roger states "You'd be surprised by how little £1m covers these days" it may not seem very realistic to the working class watching this because one million is a large sum of value. This could also show how capital maybe is supporting left-wing idealogy claiming the middle-upper class will never be satisfied with how much money they own. Although on the flip side some characters have a realistic response for example when Quwntinas repose to when she was being sent back.
The passability of the plot is quite accurate because what happens to all the character is very realistic and the plot itself doesn't seem too out of reach.
According to social realism, Capital shows the hardships of the characters very well although there may be a bias for the left-wing ideology because the Kamal family and Quentina who express more left-wing idealogy are seen has happier and connected whereas Mary and Roger's family who expresses right-wing idealogy are seen to be less connected and more miserable.
For Deutschland 83, I believe the drama is less realistic then Capital since the Cold War was more historic and therefore to accurately represent the even may be harder. For example, the comments of German on Guardian stated "the portrayal of the old East Germany, particularly the Stasi, was not sinister enough and the way the state manipulated the populace into spying on their neighbours and family did not come through strong enough." and "I live in Germany and the locals didn't like it for two reasons: It was riddled with very silly inaccuracies, which were required for the plot to work;".
This goes to show how realism is a vital component of television drama because drama is shown inaccurately then they will be quick to criticize. However throughout the especially in the scene when Martin tries to take pictures of the documents the show uses real documents which adds a sense of realism and gives an audience pleasure, surveillance.
In Deutschland 83 the characters are generally portrayed realistically, for example, Martin's responses to when he was faced with problems seemed very accurate according to his background and class and the trouble ships he faced seemed to be true considering he was young and film has a sense of coming of age genre. Although the characters from the older generation were usually shown more negatively, therefore, making it harder for the audience to seem them as realistic.
For social realism. there were many times in the show the problems of different classes weren't shown accurately, for example, East Germany's families were usually fetishized and seen as more positive even though they had more restrictions and less wealth then the west. Especially in the BBQ scene, in East german everyone is seen as more positive and connected and the show may be trying to state that if you have less wealth you more likely to be happy and those who are rich, the west, seemed to have fake connections and arent truly happy which is clear slight inaccurate because back in Cold War the East Germans had to suffer more.
In conclusion, realism is a very important aspect of Television drama because there needs to be a sense of realism for the audience to enjoy a show and identify themselves with the characters of the show. It's clear to see Capital is more realistic then Deutschland 83, however, this may be because of when both of the events were placed and the genres because Deushtland 83 is postmodernism drama, therefore, has a tendency to be abstract.
